Application of nutritional support chain management in perioperative period of patients with gastric cancer

  • Objective 

    To explore the effect of perioperative nutritional support chain management on the postoperative nutritional status and nutrition knowledge-attitude-practice level of patients with gastric cancer.

    Methods 

    A total of 162 gastric cancer patients were divided into control group with 82 cases (admitted from June to December 2021) and intervention group with 80 cases (admitted from January to June 2022) according to their admission time. The control group received routine perioperative nutritional management, while the intervention group received nutritional support chain management. The nutritional status and nutrition knowledge-attitude-practice level were compared between the two groups at one month after surgery.

    Results 

    The proportion of patients with total protein < 60 g/L in the intervention group at one month after surgery was 5.00%, which was lower than 14.63% in the control group; the proportion of patients with albumin < 35 g/L in the intervention group at one month after surgery was 3.75%, which was lower than 13.41% in the control group; the proportion of patients with normal body mass index (BMI) in the intervention group at one month after surgery was 83.75%, which was significantly higher than 59.75% in the control group (P < 0.05). The scores of nutrition knowledge, support attitude and support behavior as well as the total nutrition knowledge-attitude-practice score in the intervention group at one month after surgery were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05).

    Conclusion 

    Implementation of perioperative nutritional support chain management can effectively increase the patient's nutrition intake, improve the postoperative nutritional status of gastric cancer patients, and enhance their nutrition knowledge-attitude-practice level and quality of life.
