Effect of a new light-curable calcium silicate-based material in pulpotomy of deciduous teeth

Objective To compare the clinical efficacy between a new light-curable calcium silicate-based material TheraCal LC and bioceramic material iRoot BP Plus in treating pulpotomy of deciduous teeth.

Methods A total of 118 pulp-exposed deciduous teeth after removal of necrotic tissue were randomly divided into trail group (n=59) and control group (n=59), and were respectively treated with TheraCal LC and iRoot BP Plus for pulpotomy of deciduous teeth. At 6, 12 and 18 months after operation, the clinical success rate and imaging success rate of the two groups were compared.

Results Six months after operation, the therapeutic success rate was 100.0% in the trail group and the control group; at 12 months after operation, the therapeutic success rates of the trail group and the control group were 98.3% and 96.6% respectively; at 18 months after operation, the therapeutic success rates of the trail group and the control group were 85.7% and 86.7% respectively; there were no significant differences in the therapeutic success rates between the two groups at 6, 12 and 18 months after operation (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in the success rate between the methods of filling treatment and the preformed crown repair (P>0.05).

Conclusion Both TheraCal LC and iRoot BP Plus have high success rates in the pulpotomy of deciduous teeth, but TheraCal LC has more advantages such as convenient operation, low price and short operation time in clinical practice.
