Efficacy and safety of microsurgery for young male patients with varicocele

  •   Objective  To investigate the efficacy and safety of microsurgery for young male patients with varicocele (VC).
Methods  A total of 46 young male patients with VC were treated with microsurgical varicocelectomy.
Results  All of the 46 patients completed operation successfully. All the patients were followed up for 3 to 12 months, and 7 patients (13.00%) had complications such as scrotal edema and testicular pain. No recurrence of VC occurred during follow-up. Follow-up results showed that 34 patients (73.90%) had no symptoms after operation, 9 patients (19.60%) had less symptoms and 3 patients (6.50%) had no significant improvement. At 1, 6, 12 months after operation, sperm density and total sperm count significantly improved in all the patients (P < 0.05), sperm DNA fragmentation rate significantly decreased (P < 0.05), and sperm viability, sperm motility of grade a and grade a+b significantly increased (P < 0.05).
Conclusion  Microscopic varicocelectomy through inguinal incision can effectively improve the clinical symptoms and sperm quality of young male patients with VC.
